The Ethereum (ETH) Cryptocurrency

The Ethereum Cryptocurrency

Created in 2014 by Russian programmer Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum is a blockchain-based platform that enables not only transfers of value but also the creation and management of smart contracts. The latter represent the true added value of this cryptocurrency: they are essentially decentralized software programs that execute exactly as programmed, without external interference, while verifying and enforcing agreements made between parties for the exchange of money, shares, or any other asset. These “smart contracts” can therefore be used for a wide range of applications, including voting systems, intellectual property, and domain registration. One of the platform’s most talked-about uses has been the creation of tokens, or other digital currencies that run on the Ethereum blockchain and are used to launch ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings), a form of crowdfunding for startups.

The execution of smart contracts is paid for in Ether (or Ethereum), the cryptocurrency that serves as the platform’s “fuel,” acting both as a medium of exchange between parties and as an incentive for developers to create high-quality applications while keeping the network healthy.

The enormous potential of this innovative technology and its many possible applications have made Ethereum one of the leading peer-to-peer currencies in circulation, resulting in a significant increase in both price and market capitalization over the past year. This currency has also attracted the attention of major companies such as Microsoft, Mastercard, and Cisco, which, along with others, joined a nonprofit organization called the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, established to promote the development of applications based on its blockchain.

How to mine Ethereum

As of September 2022, Ethereum completed its transition to the Proof of Stake (PoS) protocol through the upgrade known as The Merge, which permanently replaced Proof of Work (PoW)-based mining. This change made traditional Ethereum mining methods obsolete, eliminating the need for graphics cards (GPUs) and other hardware previously used to create Ether.

With the new PoS system, validators, rather than miners, are selected to add blocks to the blockchain based on the amount of Ether they have staked. To become a validator on Ethereum, at least 32 ETH must be locked in the protocol. This transition to PoS drastically reduced Ethereum’s energy consumption and eliminated the need for expensive equipment, making the validation process more accessible and sustainable.
