Ripple (XRP): the crypto of banks
Ripple Inc. is a company founded in the USA in 2012 with the aim of realising a secure, fast payment system with very low transaction costs, through the use of blockchain. RippleNet defines the network behind this distributed ledger-based system (DLT): the latter is managed not only by an open source community but also by a private company, Ripple precisely, which leads to a great centralization and differentiates it from the blockchains of other cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin.
However, this feature has attracted the most traditional banking institutions, so much so that at present well over 15 large international banks use Ripple for cross-border payments, including the giant Santander.
Its founders, Jed McCaleb, Arthur Bitto and David Schwartz, thought well in 2014 to combine XRP, a real cryptocurrency that serves the functioning of the Ripple ecosystem as an IOU credit exchange measure representing FIAT currencies (Euro, Dollar, Yen). XRP thus works for banks as always liquid money to be used as a "vehicle" in real currency transactions.
Despite being today one of the most capitalized cryptocurrencies, Ripple and its XRP are much criticized by crypto purists, on the one hand for the centralization of the management of their blockchain, as well as for the philosophy opposite to that for which Bitcoin was born, that is, rebellion against the current financial and banking system.
How to mine Ripple
Another big difference with Bitcoin and other altcoins is that XRP tokens cannot be mined, as they are all issued at the time of their creation, which further exacerbates ripple's centralization.
In fact, initially, in order to increase their adoption and value, large quantities of XRP were donated to several users, including in particular the founders of Ripple themselves, who in turn reinvested them through further donations to those banking institutions that first adopted their system.
